The New Blog

While reading one of my favorite blogs today (The Collier Family), I happened across the website of the person who created her blog- fabulouskcreative.com. She makes the coolest layouts and I want one. Now I'm going to see if Patrick can help me replicate some of her work into my new blog because he didn't have a chance to start on it yet.

I cut and taped a mock-up blog for him this morning when I was bored. The colors are going to be pink and grey. I was also thinking about what the name would be, and what my header would look like.

1. peonies & plumerias - probably my favorite name choice...reminds me of my wedding (peony bouquet and plumeria wedding cake). They are my favorite flowers and I love the ampersand because I can make it huge and in a different color.

2. lavendar & lilacs - my favorite smells and remind me of childhood. And again, the ampersand.

3. the hurst family - for obvious reasons.

4. the story of our life - I don't like this one but felt like there should be more choices.

I want to take a class and learn how to do this for myself because I'm so impatient.

Turning a House Into a Home

After we got past the challenge of picking out furniture we both love, my next challenge is turning out to be even harder. Picking out things to decorate all this space is making my head spin.

My hangup is that I am very much a matchy-matchy person. I always like it when other people pick fun things that don't necessarily "match" but seem to fit anyways though. Example: my best friend's living room. I told her, I never would have picked out those curtains (or these mirrors that you can't see here), but everything pulls together and looks fantastic.

So here is what I'm thinking. We have these colors in the kitchen backsplash:

That gives me purple, greyish blue, olive, and cream to work with. Throw in some brown and silver because of our wall trim and appliances, and maybe some red because of an entry light we have that looks pretty cool.

Before our housewarming party, my goal is to buy some pillows for the seating nook, some bar stools for the island, some art to cover the empty space on the walls and some vases to stick on mantle.

Here are some contenders.

Barstools from Lamps Plus (faux leather)

Pillows from Lamps Plus and Etsy Seller "Mia and Stitch"

And the painting of the horse in this photo: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jeffclickhomes/4322983661/in/set-72157623205761333

That's all I've got so far.

Ideas? Thoughts?

Snow-klahoma

Last week was miserable....the snow started Monday night, and when I woke up on Thursday it was a mini-blizzard going on outside our windows. We got about 5-7 inches and I was going nowhere.

Normally, I really enjoy working from home. However, last week was the first hotel opening for Home2 Suites and there were a million things to do. I had to work (hard!) from my laptop in the living room with no couch. I was sitting on the floor. For three days. And my back still hurts.

I did enjoy watching Margaret's weather coverage on KOCO. I know it sounds mean, but Ryan and I laughed every time we saw them cut to her. She looked so cold! Poor thing. She would text me between live shots to see how she looked.

We didn't have any fresh food because Ryan didn't go to the store, so I lived off of all the canned stuff in the pantry. One day for lunch, I just opened a bunch of cans and threw everything into a big plate of spaghetti noodles with olive oil. Artichoke hearts, garlic, black olives and mushrooms. It sounded good in my head, but it was actually pretty gross. Lol!

I had to get out of the house Friday or I was going to go nuts. I caught a ride with Cassie and her husband Brady. He drove us to work, and then picked us up around 3pm.

Tonight, we are supposed to get more snow. Six-12 inches to be (not) exact. Oi.

T-Town and a Scentsy Party

My Friday work day ended early when my boss announced we could leave at 5. I jumped in my car with my bags pre-packed and headed down the turnpike to see Rhiannon and Travis.

Rhiannon was in Edmond at a spa day, and we left town around the same time. I beat her to Tulsa, so Travis and I went to Target to get some yummy breakfast food. When we got back, Rhiannon was waiting for us and we immediately got back into the car to have dinner at Chili's. Travis had invited their neighbors to join us because they had never really hung out. We all spent the evening trading stories and getting to know them. Nice people, they were from the Virginia area and have a cute beagle that they dress up for holidays. Ha!

After we left Chili's, we came back to the apartment and settled in for drinks and a movie. I convinced her to watch Shutter Island because I had already seen it. The premise is so crazy that I wanted to see it again, and told Rhiannon that it wasn't scary. She disagreed with that statement several times throughout the movie (and had trouble sleeping- I feel bad now, but I really didn't think it would bother her!)

My friend and her cute dog

Saturday morning, Rhiannon cooked us a huge breakfast of sausage, pancakes and eggs. Then we drove around running errands. She stopped at a cute paper shop to check prices on wedding invitation paper and then we went to Target to buy food for the Scentsy party.

That afternoon, Rhiannon's mom came over and we made a veggie tray, amazing bruschetta, stuffed mushroom caps, two kinds of wings, spring rolls, chocolates, cheesecake bites and hummus.

We had just finished with the food when Rhiannon's friend Kate called and told her that her dog had been hit by a car. She wasn't going to be able to make it. Then we got more news that a few other girls couldn't make it either. I think Rhiannon was a little bummed, but she cheered up when we started eating and then Reggie's mom showed up. We had a good time smelling and commenting on all the scents.....and made a pretty good dent in the food.

I was sad to leave that night, but I had to open the next day at the restaurant. It was a super short visit but I'm glad I got the chance to catch up and spend some quality time with those crazy kids and their dog.

Weekend Anticipation

Today is Friiiiiiidayyyyyy!

And I'm in a great mood. The weather is supposed to hit 73 degrees today, and I'm headed to Tulsa to see Rhiannon after work. Yay!

She is having a Scentsy party tomorrow, and I didn't want to drive all that way for just a few hours of fun. I demand a whole 24 hours of fun. So we will spend tomorrow getting things ready for her party and maybe we'll party a bit tonight. I'm breaking out some of my hosting serverware since it's all still in boxes because I've had no reason to use it. Ha.

Thunder Up

I just got back from a nerve-wracking interview for a position as Corporate Communications Manager for the OKC Thunder. I honestly have no clue if it went well or not....I feel like I answered all of his questions pretty intelligently, but I was so nervous that I spoke in a bit of a monotone. I'm afraid I came across as boring. He said there were 300 people that applied for the position and I am one of the 20 people that he's interviewing for round one. Holy smokes. He will contact me if I made it to round two, and he wants the person to start by Feb. 21. That's very soon!

So...I'm not sure if you should wish me luck or not. I would be excited/thrilled/terrified/sad if I was offered the spot. I've been with Crosby-Volmer for more than three years and have no huge reason to leave, other than things can be a little monotonous and I haven't had a raise for awhile. I do love my boss and Patrick, and we're moving to a new office space.

Funny how much of your life is spent at work....it really can become part of your DNA, who you are. Little things like today (interview) could spark a huge change in what you do every day, where you go, the people you meet, the attitude you take on.

It's in their court (haha!) now, I'll wait and see.

Weekend Review

I didn't get a weekend off....I lived at the restaurant. It was exhausting.

I worked a double on Saturday. Lunch was pretty slow, and I didn't feel like driving home during my two hour break, so I just hung out and ate lunch there and read my book (The Girl Who Played with Fire, it is fantastic!) My night shift started out horrible with two ladies camping at one of my tables for almost 3 hours. Things didn't get much better when the last table of the night left without leaving me a tip. It was 3 people, with a $60 tab and we had been joking around, they were really nice, and I didn't mind waiting around for an extra hour and a half when I could have been finishing up my side work and getting home. When they left, I saw a line drawn through the tip part of the credit card slip. I looked high and low around the table because surely they had left me some cash. Nope. What is wrong with people??

I got home around midnight and went straight to bed. Then I woke up and put on my work clothes again. Sunday morning opening shifts are the worst. I got there at 10, and nobody even came into the restaurant until 12:30. It was probably the slowest I have ever seen it. The manager sent everyone home around 1. She had cut me too, but I asked to stay because I needed to make some more money. I was there until 5 and did ok, since we had a little pop right before the evening shift took over.

Now it's Monday and I need a break.
